Chariots on Fire

Our Chariots on Fire event ran from Friday 22 June to Sunday 24 June 2012 and raised over £36,000 for Barnardo's. Starting in Market Harborough and finishing near Milton Keynes you'd be forgiven for thinking it was a short slow drive - it wasn't, we covered a lot of miles inbetween!

The excitement of the three day Chariots on Fire event started on Thursday evening 21 June when teams checked-in and made final preparations, and concluded on the Sunday evening with an ‘Olympic closing ceremony’ where we all enjoyed dinner, medal presentations and a final night of fun together!

This year’s participants looped across the rolling hills and secluded valleys of the East Midlands and surrounding area, the clay vales and open plateaus, the chalk ridges, deep combes, river valleys and marsh lands – truly outstanding!

We stopped off and stayed overnight in some of the finest examples of traditional market towns and historic cities, each with unique characters shaped by hundreds of years of heritage, industry and local customs. Despite the rain we still enjoyed Rutland Water, Lincoln, Grafham Water and Bletchley Park.

But let’s not forget that this was a driving tour, with an Olympic theme! Each team, represented their chosen country, chasing dreams of glory in an array of Olympic themed challenges throughout the event. Some of these challenges were so awesome and took place in such inspiring venues, they had teams sacrificing everything for Gold!

We also had a fantastic afternoon at Manby Motorplex with some challenging driving that included skid car, rally driving, artic HGV lorry, double decker bus and 4x4 offroad action! With a sunny afternoon, great burger van, and so much adrenaline we had an amazing time!

We would like to thank all the teams, their supporters, our sponsors and all the venues that helped to make this event such a success and enabled us to raise so much money to support the work of Barnardo's.

Chariots in action

Last weekend saw teams battle for position in this year's White Hat Rally challenge that took in Rutland Water, Cadwell Park, Manby Motorplex, Grafham Water, and Bletchley Park. Participants struggled with navigational, physical, mental and driving challenges, not to mention the endurance challenge posed by the three very long days and nights!

Above all, fundraising in aid of Barnardo's was a huge success - so far over £30,000 has been raised, and as the teams continue to collect money over the next few weeks the total is sure to rise. Help vulnerable children by supporting the teams - make a donation today!

Highlights of the event and results will be posted here soon, but in the meantime take a look at some of the photos from the weekend. Also check our posterous blog and twitter feeds to discover how the weekend unfolded. Join us next year and be part of it!

Diana Moran - "The Green Goddess"

Diana Moran, also known as "The Green Goddess" as she hosted the popular exercise segment of BBC1's Breakfast Time programme in her trademark green leotard, put the teams through their paces at Brooklands.

Hearing about our rally in support of ChildLine she was only too pleased to come and talk to the teams and join in the fun at Brooklands Motor Museum.

After lunch Diana had all the teams excersising in the paddock before taking an interest, and a ride, in some of our more unusual vehicles. It certainly created a lot of interest and helped to promote our charity fundraising event.

Carry on Driving

In 2011 we travelled from Brighton to Blackpool over three days, taking in Brooklands Motor Museum, a brewery, and Blackpool Pleasure Beach along with many challenges, tricky navigation and an amazing route. We raised over £38,000 for ChildLine, an NSPCC charity. This small selection of photos shows some of the fun we had. You can also see the MINI Medics encounter with a bull! (WARNING may contain strong language), and many more videos and photos online!
